ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OFFICER

DEPARTMENT: PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

REFERENCE: 015/2018

SALARY: POST LEVEL D3 (R375 372.20 TO 419 576.02) per annum

(Fringe Benefits: Include inter alia, 13th cheque, pension fund, medical aid scheme, housing allowances).

REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent must have a National Diploma Environmental Management/Environmental Science/Law. At least 2-3 years’ experience working in environmental management. Knowledge of local government legislations and environmental management policies. Computer literacy, fluency in IsiZulu and English and a Driver’s license are some of the requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

ØOverseeing waste management facilities,

ØCo-ordinating and supporting the District reporting on the SAWIS

ØSupervising, monitoring the transportation of waste to ensure that it takes place efficiently without contaminating air, land or water resources,

ØProviding inputs in the development, promotion and implementation of new waste disposal schemes,

ØMonitoring the quality and performance of waste services, including contract management of external providers,

ØAiming to meet waste reduction and recycling targets,

ØInvestigating and following up claims of the illegal dumping of waste and working with other waste regulations enforcement staff,

ØDealing with enquiries and complaints from members of the public,

ØConsulting community on issues of waste management,

ØDeveloping, reviewing, implementing, monitoring and reporting of Environmental Management Sector Plans,

ØPlanning and implementing of environmental programmes and projects,

ØConducting air quality management,

ØConducting climate change management,

ØConducting environmental impact assessments, planning and co-ordinating the district state of the environmental report,

ØSupporting and participating in environmental activities conducted at local municipalities or other stakeholders.

ØPreparing Operational Performance reports,

ØEnforcing compliance with current legislations, supporting and contributing to the formulation of policies.
