OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER (OHS)

(1 POST)

SALARY:1st Notch of Post Level D2 (R296 457.06 to R 326 765.22) per annum

(Fringe Benefits: Include inter alia, 13th cheque, pension fund, medical aid scheme, housing allowances).

REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent must have a National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management,NQF Level 5/6 SAMTRAC or Equivalent qualifications, plus Incident investigation. Knowledge and understanding of COIDA, HIRA and SHE Systems tools. Must be registered with the relevant professional body, and have 1-2 years’ experience in the HR field.  Computer literacy, fluency in IsiZulu and English and a Driver’s license (code EB) are some of the requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

ØCommunicating with the Manager: Co-ordinator: Safety on specific Key Performance Areas (Accident prevention, etc) with a view to aligning functions/ objectives against the capacity and capability of the Section.

ØConducting regular inspections of every workplace and equipment for compliance with general and specific standard relating to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

ØInvestigating accidents/ incidents and unsafe situations at the workplace

ØImplementing safety rules and regulations designed to prevent accidents and incidents in the workplace

ØEstablishing guidelines for competency requirements, relating to operators of plants and machinery through adherence to statutory requirements.

ØReviewing the efficiency of measures which have been adopted regarding Health and Safety issues.

ØAttending Department of Labour hearing in terms of legislation which, falls within the scope of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, section 24.

ØPreparing and development of written safe work procedures and man job specifications within the unit.

ØIdentifying loss producing conditions and practices and evaluates the severity thereof, and defines areas of weakness and the potentials for loss in existing policies and makes recommendations for corrective action.

ØConducting Environmental surveys and inspections with the use of specialized equipment.

ØCoordinating contractors to ensure the compliance of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and attend Health and Safety unit meetings.
